Hurricane Debby
Hurricane Debby crossed the northern Caribbean, and caused a lot of
rain damage in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic before it
dissipated near Cuba.
We flew a number of missions on this hurricane,
including a "synoptic" or wind-mapping flight. We released a series of dropsondes from high altitude to map out the environment around Debby, and the NHC credited the
information from our aircraft and the NOAA G-IV with making a significant change to the forecasted track. At the same
time, we had another WC-130 down below, measuring the heart of the storm. A line of thunderstorms is silhoutted against a sunset, as we continued our flight into the
night.
