53 WRS History -- The Squadron Patch

The emblem is symbolic of the squadron and its varied mission. Against a white background, the central figure of the insignia, the red hurricane symbol, represents the most important and well known aspect of the unit's mission - aerial reconnaissance and penetration of tropical storms and hurricanes. The blue flight symbol superimposed over the hurricane symbol represents aerial reconnaissance, the flight symbol penetrating. The molecule, symbolic of atomic energy, represents world-wide research projects. The gold lightning bolt, also a weather symbol, represents, by its trailing of the flight symbol, the support rendered to other agencies; it is further representative of the dynamic, prompt and timely execution of mission responsibility. The emblem bears the Air Force colors of ultramarine blue and golden yellow, and the national colors of red, white and blue. This emblem was approved on 11 April 1963.

The first emblem associated with the 53rd Reconnaissance Squadron (Long Range) Weather, was approved on 15 November 1945, and depicts a weather "wizard" on a flying carpet. No significance is officially recorded for this emblem.
