53 WRS History -- 1945-47
The War Department (forerunner of today's Department of Defense) created the 3rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, Air Route, Medium on August 7, 1944. The unit was activated three weeks later, on August 31, but it wasn't until the next February that enough people and planes arrived to form an operational flight (small group of airplanes). Two more flights were added later that year. The flights were spread across Canada, New England, and Bermuda, and scouted the weather until inactivated just three years later.
